Aggravated life sentence for 79-year-old suspect of murder in coffeehouse

Kerim Yakut, 79, who stabbed and killed Cevdet Asa, who was sitting in a cafe in Bursa’s Mustafakemalpaşa district, was sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment in the trial in which he was detained.

The incident occurred on July 12, 2022 in the rural Ormankadı District of Mustafakemalpaşa district. Kerim Yakut, who is claimed to be mentally unstable, attacked and injured Cevdet Asa, who was sitting in the cafe, with a knife.
Upon the notification, the gendarmerie and medical teams were sent to the address. Cevdet Asa, who received 2 stab wounds, could not be saved at Karacabey State Hospital, where he was taken by ambulance after the first aid of the medical team. Kerim Yakut, who was detained by the Gendarmerie, was arrested in the courthouse where he was transferred after his proceedings.
MENTAL HEALTH IN PLACE
A lawsuit was filed against Kerim Yakut at the Bursa 7th High Criminal Court for the crime of ‘deliberate killing’. In the forensic medicine report taken for Kerim Yakut during the trial, it was determined that he was in good mental health.
Kerim Yakut appeared before the judge at the decision hearing. Cevdet Asa’s wife Aysel Asa and her daughter Hülya Sağlam also attended the hearing with the attorneys of the parties. Asked for the last word, Yakut said that he did not kill Cevdet Asa, while Aysel Asa and Hülya Sağlam demanded the most severe punishment of the accused. Hülya Sağlam said, “Send aggravated life imprisonment to the accused who left me without a father.”
Announcing its decision, the court board sentenced Kerim Yakut to aggravated life imprisonment. (DHA)
