The “Mbappé affair” as a trigger
The question of image rights for French internationals was put on the table in March 2022 when Blues superstar Kylian Mbappé refused to participate in a marketing operation with several sponsors, during a gathering of the French team in Clairefontaine, denouncing the terms of an agreement that he considered outdated.
The new convention, which sets out the rights and duties of internationals on the use of their image by the Federation’s partners, has been under negotiation since that date, without an agreement having been reached, nor before. the 2022 World Cup in Qatarnor since.
“I would first like to salute the spirit of responsibility of the players, the quality of our discussions and the climate of trust in which they took place”commented the president of the FFF Philippe Diallo in a press release sent to Agence France-Presse.
“The players of the French team, in particular captain Kylian Mbappé and vice-captain Antoine Griezmann, are perfectly aware of the role that is theirs in the selection and that they play for the influence of French football”he continues.
“It is under these conditions that we were able to find a compromise which takes into account the legitimate requests for development that they had formulated and which preserves the interests of the Federation and its partners. This agreement is extremely important for French football. We are moving hand in hand towards the Euro, in a climate of trust and transparency, and I am delighted about it”added the leader.
