My windows open onto a garden that I have planted, a very small garden, a little Japanese, which overlooks a large common garden. I’ve lived in the southern suburbs since the early 1980s. The suburbs weren’t in my dreams at all. I’m provincial, so I love Paris! At the time, nobody went to the suburbs, it seemed very, very far, even with a metro, the ring road was a border. My friend the sculptor Alina Szapocznikow (1926-1973) lived closer to Paris and it already seemed like the end of the world to me. Now it’s my neighborhood, I know everyone, I have my favorite bar where I go every morning after my breakfast, drink my coffee and listen to the bistro conversations.
