“Artists’ trams”: Montpellier sees public transport in color


Selfie lovers and influencers from London or New York would be well advised to make a detour via Montpellier. The covering of the fifth line of the city’s tramway, which will not enter service before 2025, has just been unveiled on a model presented at the Jardin des Plantes in the Occitan metropolis. He is the Franco-Cameroonian artist Barthelemy Toguo which signs the livery of this line called to serve the universities and the large parks of the city.

The world-famous designer, who imagined a “Leaf of Life” on the theme of the jungle, received the specifications as a blessing. “I drew without difficulty, he explains, because I have been working for a long time on the relationship between man and nature. Flowers, hippie patterns, seabed and lace

“The people of Montpellier will live with this work every day”, rejoices Barthélemy Toguo, who caused a sensation in 2016 in Montpellier with his exhibition “Deluges” at the Carré Saint-Anne. This time, on the white background of the trains of the future tram, which will move from Lavérune, to the west, to Clapiers, north of Montpellier, it offers a lush universe, with lianas, parrots or small crocodiles.

A small break with the swallows of line 1 (signed Garouste and Bonetti), the flowers and hippie colors of line 2 (Bonetti), the flora and harmonies of the sea of ​​line 3 and the laces of line 4 imagined through Christian Lacroix. Montpellier has got into the habit of entrusting the dressing of its trams to famous designers.
