Assad arrives in Moscow for talks with Putin
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad arrived in Moscow to hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. It is reported by the agency SANA.
The Kremlin confirmed negotiations with Assad. The leaders’ meeting will take place tomorrow, March 15.
“Topical issues of further development of Russian-Syrian cooperation in the political, trade, economic and humanitarian spheres, as well as the prospects for a comprehensive settlement of the situation in and around Syria will be discussed,” the Kremlin said in a statement.
Earlier today, the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov said that the head of state is scheduled to have international contacts this week. Commenting on the plans on the eve of the anniversary of the annexation of Crimea to Russia, the Kremlin spokesman said that Putin will hold several meetings and take part in events via videoconference.
Putin last met with Assad in Moscow in September 2021. Then the Russian leader congratulated the Syrian president on his election victory. The Presidents also discussed the political situation in Syria, the fight against international terrorism and issues of humanitarian cooperation. In particular, Putin expressed concern about the presence of foreign armed forces on the territory of the republic without a UN decision and without the sanction of Assad.
In early February 2023, Putin and Assad spoke by phone after the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria. The Russian president expressed his condolences in connection with the consequences of the natural disaster and offered assistance to the Syrian side, which Assad accepted. As a result, rescuers from the Russian Emergencies Ministry went to the republic.
