ATP tournament in Indian Wells – Hurkacz defeat in the third round

Hubert Hurkacz was eliminated in the third round of the ATP 1000 tennis tournament on hard courts in Indian Wells, California. On Monday, the ninth-seeded Pole lost to the American Tommy Paul (No. 17) 6:4, 2:6, 4:6.

The match, which lasted almost two hours, was very tight except at the beginning of the second set when Paul won four games in a row. In this way, the American responded to the defeat in the first game, which was decided by a break in the tenth game.

In the deciding set, both tennis players had chances to take the initiative. Hurkacz, after defending two break points in the third game, was close to getting a break in the next game, but also wasted two break points.

The seventh game turned out to be crucial. Hurkacz was serving 30:15, but the next three points were scored by Paul. The Pole could quickly make up for the break, but he did not use three break points. A few minutes later, the American celebrated promotion to the 1/8 finals.

It was the second official meeting of these tennis players. Paul has avenged his 2021 loss in Paris.

The 26-year-old American is having the best season of his career. In January’s Australian Open, he was eliminated only in the semi-finals, and while preparing directly for two prestigious spring competitions in the USA, he reached the final in Acapulco.

In Indian Wells, Hurkacz also participated in doubles competition. Together with Grigor Dimitrov, they advanced to the 1/8 finals, but had to withdraw due to the injury of the Bulgarian.

Coach Craig Boynton’s charge now faces a tournament in Miami starting next week. In 2021, Hurkacz in Florida was the best, and last year he reached the semi-finals.

Singles 3rd round match result:

Tommy Paul (USA, 17) – Hubert Hurkacz (Poland, 9) 4:6, 6:2, 6:4. (PAP)
