To qualify, Denmark will have to win against Australia.
Bad start at the 2022 World CupDenmark approach their decisive match against Australia on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.) in Qatar without a net, where the Euro semi-finalist hopes to regain some of the conquering spirit that made the Danes the team in vogue of summer 2021.
With an inaugural draw against Tunisia (0-0)then a close defeat against the reigning world champion French team (2-1)the Scandinavian selection no longer has a choice to reach the eighth: it must beat the Socceroos and hope that the Tunisians will not create the feat against the already qualified Blues.
Regain the momentum of 2021
Relaunch with their backs to the wall, Denmark had already done it eighteen months ago at the Euro, carried by a national impetus and a wave of European sympathy after the impressive heart attack in the middle of a match suffered by their playmaker Christian Eriksen.
The latter, saved by the doctors, had to interrupt his tournament and embark on a slow convalescence which, after the installation of a pacemaker, allowed him to resume the thread of his career in club and selection… until playing this World Cup-2022 in Qatar.
But at the time, upset to have seen their partner come close to death, his teammates had started their Euro with two defeats against Finland (1-0) and Belgium (2-1)… before breaking free during of their third pool match and snatch qualification (4-1).
“Maybe it’s a bit like the Euros, when we faced Belgium in the second match (…) and lost 2-1, like against France“, philosophized the Danish coach Kasper Hjulmand.
In a press conference the day before the match, the technician nevertheless admitted that his team no longer had the right to make mistakes on Wednesday. “We feel pressure with this match, of course, but the best way to manage it is to have a solid group. We are never alone, we do things together. Win, lose, fight, we are together“, he launched.
Eriksen “focus” on this last match
Together, the Danes were at the Euro organized in eleven host cities of eleven countries, including Copenhagen, and had made their way to the last four by taming Wales in turn in eighths (4-0) then the Czech Republic in the quarters (2-1), before falling against England in extra time of the semi-final (2-1).
A year later, the structure of the team is the same and the return to form of Eriksen, who has become a symbol, is fueling Danish hopes.
“The focus is on the last game“Launched the attacking midfielder of Manchester United immediately after the defeat against the Blues. “To have the opportunity to continue, we have to win. We are in a good position, but we have to score.»
With only one goal scored in two matches, signed by defender Andreas Christensen against the Blues, Denmark know that their salvation will depend on their attackers. For this, Kasper Dolberg could occupy the point of the attack in place of Andreas Cornelius, and the whole Kingdom hopes that Mikkel Damsgaard, one of the revelations of the Euro, will find his legs of fire from summer 2021 .
Beware, however, of the Australians, who had held off the Danes at the 2018 World Cup (1-1). “I expect a great team from Australia with great collective strength“Concluded Kasper Hjulmand, adding:”…as we define ourselves“.
