Bernard Laporte in police custody for laundering aggravated tax fraud

The referendum for nominate Patrick Buisson as president-delegate of the FFR only started a day ago. It must end Thursday noon. The candidate nominated by Bernard Laporte has made his entire campaign on the necessary maintenance of this management team in the name of general serenity. To preserve French rugby from all the turmoil it has just been through for five years. And now the cases are already coming back, new cases concerning Bernard Laporte.

According to our information, Mr. Laporte was placed in police custody on Tuesday for laundering aggravated tax evasion. Two other people were also taken into custody. This case, completely separate from the one that led him to the Paris Criminal Court last September, is in the hands of the National Financial Prosecutor’s Office. A preliminary investigation was opened in August 2020 and entrusted to the Financial Judicial Investigation Service (SEJF).

At the beginning of January, Mr. Laporte had to withdraw and abandon all the prerogatives of a president of the FFR under pressure from the Ministry of Sports and the ethics committee. This followed his conviction on December 13 for corruption, influence peddling, illegal taking of interests for offenses committed in the exercise of his functions. Mr. Laporte appealed against this trial judgment. In recent days, he has been engaged in intensive telephone canvassing in order to obtain a vote in favor of his candidate from several club presidents.
