DECRYPTION – The sector presents a roadmap aiming for a 50% reduction in Co2 emissions by 2030. It will require 3 to 5.5 billion euros of investment. Public aid is expected.

The stakes are considerable for the French cement industry. On Thursday, the entire sector will meet in Paris to present its “decarbonization” roadmap, which will then be proposed to the government. “Today, it is absolutely necessary to accelerate on this pathpoints out Bruno Pillon, president of the French union of the cement industry (Sfic) and boss in France of the German giant Heidelberg Materials, in an interview with the Figaro. Decarbonize cement represents a major issue, because its manufacture is very emitting CO2. Cement is essentially made up of clinker, a mixture of 80% limestone and 20% clay baked at very high temperatures (1450 degrees). This cooking produces a chemical reaction that splits the CO2 from the rest of the mixture. Consequence: the process is, by nature, highly emitting CO2.
