Caroline Garcia in the quarterfinals in San Diego

The 10th player in the world beat American Sloane Stephens in three sets last night.

Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia, world No.10, qualified for the quarter-finals of the WTA 500 in San Diego thanks to her 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 victory on Wednesday against American Sloane Stephens. In the next round, she will meet a compatriot of her opponent of the day, the 43rd in the world Danielle Collins who lost to the Latvian Jelena Ostapenko (16th), 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Against Stephens (36th), Garcia relied on her serve with eight aces, ping almost all of her first balls while remaining very effective on her second shots. The 29-year-old Lyonnaise, seeded N.2, thus took her revenge against the one who eliminated her in August at the gates of the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 in Cincinnati, of which she was the title holder.

Also on Wednesday, Tunisian world seed N.1 and N.7 Ons Jabeur was eliminated by Russian Anastasia Potapova (27th) 6-4, 7-6 (7/4).
