“Clearly they were above us,” admits Fournier

Leaders of this French team beaten in the final of the Euro by Spain on Sunday, in Berlin, Evan Fournier and Rudy Gobert deliver their feelings.

Evan Fournier (captain of the French team, after the Eurobasket 2022 final lost 88-76 against Spain) : “It's hard. They were better than us. They dominated us head and shoulders. Clearly they were above us. There is nothing to say. As expected, they bugged us with their shifting defence. But it was ours that was missing. They were patient in attack, they were able to put us wide and bring out our defense. (How to explain the loss of contact after getting closer?) They made adjustments and we didn't respond. We are on a good series thanks to the euphoria and fighting. But they did not panic. They kept reciting their basketball and since they dominated us the whole game like that, they kept going. They are champions for a reason, they managed to bring out the points of all the teams, including us.»

Rudy Gobert (pivot of the French team) : “We are behind from start to finish, we are chasing the score all game. They're not the most fun to play. We must congratulate Spain who knew how to make a big start and Juancho (Hernangomez) caught fire (18 of his 27 points in the first period, 7/9 at long distance at the end, Editor's note). Losing two finals in two years is hard. It's up to me to be better. I did not know how to help my team. I take responsibility to come back better. It's hard to pass up an opportunity like this. Personally, it's a dream to win this title, to have this gold medal around your neck. It's hard to miss that. You have to use that to come back stronger. I'm tired of silver medals. I'm proud of the course but it's not what we wanted.»
