Iqbal, a former Deputy Superintendent of Police, was heading the Anti-Narcotics Investigation Unit of Lahore Police when the ANF busted the drug-trafficking racket.
Pakistan’s Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) busted a major drug smuggling network into India and also busted an underworld don in uniform. The drug-trafficking network was being run by none other than Mazhar Iqbal, the head of the anti-narcotics wing of Lahore Police. Officials told Pakistan’s Dawn newspaper that the network led by Mazhar Iqbal used to smuggle , especially heroin, into India using drones.
Iqbal, a former Deputy Superintendent of Police, was heading the Anti-Narcotics Investigation Unit of Lahore Police when the ANF busted the drug-trafficking racket. Since 1994, Iqbal has been dismissed from service six times and suspended 45 times for his involvement in illegal activities. Most of the cases against him are related to drug trafficking. Surprisingly, despite such a dubious track record, Iqbal was given the post of head of the anti-narcotics department of Lahore Police.
According to senior police officials of Pakistan, Mazhar Iqbal has acquired a lot of wealth through these illegal activities. The busting of the network was announced by Pakistani Rangers last week. The Rangers claimed to have arrested six Indians inside Pakistani territory for allegedly trying to smuggle , arms and ammunition. Four of the arrested smugglers are Gurmeet Singh, Shinder Singh, Juginder Singh and Vishal Jagga – residents of Firozpur, Punjab. While Ratan Pal Singh and Garvender Singh are from Jalandhar and Ludhiana respectively.
