German Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Andrea Se said that the high rate of voter turnout in Turkey shows that Turkish citizens highly value these democratic standards.
Se and German Government Spokesperson Steffen Hebestreit evaluated the Presidential and 28th Term Parliamentary Elections held yesterday in Turkey in Berlin. Reminding that the OSCE observers also follow the elections in Turkey, Se noted that the reports of the observers will be awaited in order to evaluate the observations regarding the election.
Government Spokesperson Hebestreit said: “At the moment we do not see any impact or delay in important international decisions. This is the standard process in democracies, and we find it good.”
“WE RESPECT THE WILL OF THE TURKISH PEOPLE”
Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani also stated that they respect the will of the Turkish people regarding the General Elections for President and Parliament held on 14 May in Turkey. Se said that the high rate of participation in the elections in Turkey shows that Turkish citizens highly value these democratic standards: “The high rate of participation in the elections showed that Turkish citizens in particular value and use these democratic standards very much,” he said.
Reminding that the OSCE observers also follow the elections in Turkey, Se noted that the reports of the observers will be awaited in order to evaluate the observations regarding the election.
Government Spokesperson Hebestreit stated that he thinks that no one is against the functioning of democratic processes.
Stating that they found the democratic elections satisfactory, Hebestreit said, “This is what should happen. It is our wish that we have always expressed that the election campaign will be carried out within a fair framework,” he said.
Noting that he received information about the elections in Turkey from Prime Minister Olaf Scholz’s foreign policy adviser, Jens Plötner, Hebestreit said, “We have a consular representation in Turkey. Of course, information was provided by evaluating all open sources.”

In an interview with the Italian newspaper Il Messaggero, Tajani made essments on the issues on the international agenda. Reminding that the presidential and general elections were held in Turkey yesterday, Tajani commented, “Turkey remains one of the main interlocutors for us in NATO and for the stability of the Mediterranean.”
When asked about the prolongation of the war in Ukraine and the non-prolongation of the Black Sea Grain Corridor agreement, Tajani said, “This is a scenario we do not want to think about. The lives of millions of people in poverty are at stake. A crisis may arise in sub-Saharan Africa and countries in the center of Africa, with the war in Sudan, which risks initiating a very dangerous process in migration. (AA)
