Falkov allowed the reduction of the period of study in the magistracy to one year

In the new system of education, the period of study in the magistracy, sufficient for obtaining in-depth professional knowledge, may be one year, said the Minister of Science and Higher Education of Russia Valery Falkov on the air of the Rossiya-24 TV channel.

“In the new coordinate system, it will be possible, in accordance with the demand of the labor market, to prepare or obtain in-depth professional knowledge in a master’s program in a year,” said the head of the Ministry of Education and Science (quoted by TASS).

According to him, the graduates of the specialty will have the opportunity to study free of charge in the master’s, residency or assistant’s programs. Falkov clarified that we are talking about 600,000 graduates.

The minister stressed that the master’s program is not a continuation of basic education – it is “in-depth specialized knowledge”, and it should be in universities with appropriate personnel, organizational, financial and infrastructural capabilities.

On February 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a reform of higher education in Russia. In his message to the Federal Assembly, the head of state said that it is necessary to return to basic training in universities for a period of 4 to 6 years. But if the profession requires additional training, then you can continue your studies in the magistracy or residency. The transition to the new system should be smooth, so that those who are studying now can get an education in current programs, he stressed.

On May 24, 2022, the Ministry of Education and Science announced that it would develop its own education system in order to abandon the Bologna system. Before the introduction of the Bologna system in Russia, students studied at universities for 5-6 years within the framework of the “specialist” system, i.e., graduates received diplomas of “specialists”. This form still exists in some universities, but the countries participating in the system consider their diplomas as bachelor’s degrees.

At the same time, Falkov said earlier that elements of the Bologna system could be partially preserved: according to him, a “radical demolition” of the system existing in Russia now is not needed.
