Feyenoord fans invade the center of Rotterdam to celebrate the league title


One hundred thousand fans of the Feyenoord club gathered in the city center of Rotterdam to celebrate the title.

More than a hundred thousand supporters of Feyenoord gathered in the center of Rotterdam on Monday to celebrate their team’s Dutch league titlethe 16th in its history but only the fourth in the last 30 years.

Thousands of fans filled the streets outside City Hall early Monday, hours before the team appeared on the balcony around noon local time.

Feyenoord clinched their first Eredivisie title since 2017 on Sunday with an easy 3-0 win over Go Ahead Eagles, sparking wild celebrations in the port city that lasted all night. The city scheduled official celebrations for midday on Monday to avoid riots that have erupted at similar celebrations in the past.

The streets in front of City Hall were closed when they reached capacity a few hours before the ceremony, to avoid overcrowding, while alcohol was banned and police searched fans for lights fireworks. Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb said Sunday night’s festivities ped without major incident, although more than 100 people were arrested for vandalism, gross drunkenness and aulting police.
