Filimonov proposed Kuvshinnikov’s candidacy for the post of senator

Former governor of the Vologda region Oleg Kuvshinnikov will take the post of senator from the region. Acting Governor Georgy Filimonov announced this during his presentation to the government.

“I am nominating the former governor of the Vologda region, Oleg Aleksandrovich Kuvshinnikov, for the post of senator from the region,” he said (quoted by T).

On October 31, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree by which he temporarily appointed Georgy Filimonov to the post of governor of the Vologda region instead of Oleg Kuvshinnikov, who resigned. The President thanked Kuvshinnikov for the work he has done over 12 years, and noted that he knows about Kuvshinnikov’s desire “to remain in the sphere of interests of the Vologda region and work for its benefit in the future.”

Kuvshinnikov has led the region since 2011. He began his political career in 2002 as a deputy of the Cherepovets City Duma. In 2006, he took the post of first vice-mayor, and a year later he won the election for the head of the city with a result of 65.3%. In December 2011, after the resignation of Governor Vyacheslav Pozgalev (he had held this post since 1996), Kuvshinnikov was appointed acting head of the region, and then confirmed in this position. He was re-elected twice in direct elections.
