Girona beats Valencia to take the lead

Winners over Valencia (2-1) on Saturday for the 15th day of the Spanish championship, the Catalans are provisionally leaders ahead of Real Madrid.

Led until the 82nd minute, Girona overthrew Valencia (2-1) at home on Saturday during the 15th day of La Liga, thanks to a double from Uruguayan striker Cristhian Stuani, taking back first place from Real Madrid.

Author of the best first part of the season in its history, the small Catalan club temporarily overtakes Real, which faces Granada on Saturday (6:30 p.m.), and pushes Atlético Madrid (3rd) and FC Barcelona (4th) seven lengths before their shock Sunday (9:00 p.m.).

Uruguayan veteran Stuani, 37, gave his team three unexpected points by scoring two goals in six minutes (82nd, 88th), responding to Hugo Duro’s opening score on the counter (57th).

This is the 12th victory in 15 matches for the Catalans, who continue to compete with the greats of Spain. Their next challenge: bring home points from their neighbor FC Barcelona next Sunday (9:00 p.m.).
