Hersh did not rule out US intervention in the conflict in Ukraine

The United States may intervene in the conflict in Ukraine if there is a risk of Kyiv’s defeat. This statement was made by an American investigative journalist, Seymour Hersh, during an event by the American non-governmental organization Committee for the Republic.

“They tell me that the game will be like this – “this is NATO, we support NATO in offensive operations against the Russians”, which will not deceive the world. <...> It is we who are at war with the Russians,” he said, without naming his sources (quoted by TASS).

According to Hersh, the US is not ready for a direct clash with Russia. At the same time, he mentioned the formation of the 82nd and 101st airborne divisions of the American ground forces, which are now being transferred to Europe. The journalist clarified that we are talking about brigades, not battalions.

Hersh admitted that Washington is “just fooling itself” about what is happening in Ukraine and the possible outcome of the conflict. He also drew attention to the fact that Russia has not yet used its “main forces”.

Russia’s special operation in Ukraine began on February 24, 2022. In response, Western countries imposed large-scale sanctions against the Russian Federation and began to provide military assistance to Ukraine. Earlier, US President Joe Biden said that Washington would support Kyiv “for as long as it takes.” Since the beginning of the special operation, according to the Pentagon, the volume of military assistance to Ukraine amounted to $29.8 billion.

The Russian authorities have repeatedly criticized the supply of Western weapons to the Ukrainian army. In particular, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, warned that pumping Ukraine with weapons brings NATO closer to the dangerous line of a direct military clash with Russia. At the same time, the American authorities emphasize that, despite the supply of weapons, the United States is not a party to the conflict.
