Honda will be the team’s engine supplier Aston Martin in Formula 1 from the 2026 season, when the new regulations will come into force, the Japanese brand announced on Wednesday.
“Aston Martin is building a team to win in F1. It is a further step forward. We share with Honda the same determination and the same ambition to win. I am very confident that we will have a very powerful engine“said Martin Whitmarsh, managing director of Aston Martin Performance during an online press briefing.
“One of the main reasons that pushed us to take on this challenge in F1 is that the premier category of motorsport is aiming for carbon neutrality, a path that Honda also wants to follow. And this collaboration will allow us to facilitate the development of our electrical technologies.“said Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe in a statement.
Aston Martin, which is making a superb start to the season by occupying second place in the constructors’ standings behind the untouchable Red Bull, is currently powered by Mercedes.
“To be able to beat our opponents, we need to be more independent and end the collaboration with Mercedes. Mercedes remains a great partner but we also want to win so that’s why we made this decision.“, explained Martin Whitmarsh.
For now, Honda, which officially left F1 at the end of the 2021 season, is still present in the discipline under a current agreement until the end of the 2025 season to provide technical istance in the development of engines for the Red Bull and Alpha Tauri teams.
But from 2026, the two teams will be ociated with the American manufacturer Ford. On this date, the engines, already hybrid since 2014, will see a significant increase in electrical energy and will use 100% sustainable fuels.
In addition to Honda and Ford, another big name in the automobile industry, the German Audi, is also expected in 2026 for its debut in the top cl of motorsport. He will be ociated with the Sauber team (current Alfa Romeo).
Ferrari, Mercedes and Renault (Alpine), currently three of the four engine manufacturers present in the championship, will also be present at the start of the season.
