Record to beat: more than a billion billion operations per second. The Frontier supercomputer, a huge machine with several million cores and designed by Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), is the first to have crossed this symbolic threshold, also called “the exascale”. “Frontier is officially number one” in theTop500 list of supercomputers most powerful in the world,” said Antonio Neri, HPE President and CEO.

If the 1.1 exaflops machine entered the rankings last May, it remained to complete the test phase and make it fully operational. “The deployment generally takes 12 to 18 months, then the system must be formally accepted by the client for it to enter our accounts”, explains to “Echos” Antonio Neri. The client in question is an American laboratory, the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), linked to the Department of Energy. The United States spent 600 million dollars to acquire this jewel of technology.
