Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that India will open a consulate in Brisbane to fulfill a long-standing demand of the Indian diaspora. The announcement was made by Prime Minister Modi while addressing the Indian diaspora here in the presence of his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese. India currently has three consulates in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. He said, “Today I have come to you, so I am also going to make an announcement. A long standing demand of the Indian community in Brisbane will be fulfilled. Soon a Consulate General of India will be opened in Brisbane.” He said that the deepening partnership between India and Australia will empower every Indian as they have the strength of talent and skills as well as their cultural values. “These values play a big part in how you integrate with Australians,” he said.
Modi thanked his Australian counterpart for supporting him in laying the foundation stone for the Sydney suburb of ‘Little India’. Welcoming Modi at the community event, Prime Minister of Australia Albanese announced to declare Harris Park as ‘Little India’. Harris Park is a center in western Sydney where the Indian community celebrates festivals and events such as Diwali and Australia Day. “Thank you my friend Anthony,” Modi said during the community event. He said this is the recognition given by Australian society to the Indian community. He said, I thank the Premier of New South Wales, the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the City of Parramatta and the councilors for this special honor.
Prime Minister Modi termed the overseas Indians living in Australia as India’s ‘cultural ambadors’ and India’s ‘brand ambadors’ and urged them to bring one or the other Australian friend with them whenever they come to their homeland. He said, “This will give them a better chance to understand and know India.
