This Saturday evening, several matches were played as part of the qualifications for Euro 2024. Italy notably faced Malta (4-0).
Italy, under pressure in Group C, had no room for error against the modest Malta team this Saturday evening in Bari. Luciano Spalletti’s players, tormented by extra-sporting affairs incriminating their teammates Sandro Tonali and Nicolo Zaniolo in illegal bets, respondedcrushing Malta 4-0.
Giacomo Bonaventura opened the scoring for the Nazionale in the 22nd minute of play. Subsequently, Domenico Berardi scored his double (45th + 1, 63rd) before Davide Frattesi added to the score in the final moments of the meeting (93rd, 4-0). The Squadra Azzura returns to second place in Group C with 10 points behind England (13 points), overtaking Ukraine, also victorious earlier this Saturday over North Macedonia 2-0.
It was the shock of group G this Saturday evening. Hungary hosted Serbia in a match where first place in the group was at stake. The Hungarians escaped the Serbian trap by winning 2-1. Roland Varga gave the locals the advantage (20th) before Strahinja Pavlovic equalized for the visitors (33rd). But the Hungarian players did not wait long before regaining the advantage (34th).
Barely a minute later, Roland Sallai scored Hungary’s second goal at a very lively end to the first period. Nothing more will happen until the final whistle. Hungary therefore won 2-1 against Serbia and took the lead in group G with 13 points, ahead of its evening opponent. Earlier this Saturday, Bulgaria was surprised at home by Lithuania (0-2). Pijus Sirvys notably scored the two goals of the match.
The Danes rolled out
In the last match of the evening, Denmark had to perform against Kazakhstan (3-1) to get back to the top of an extremely tight Group H. Danish striker Jonas Wind opened the scoring (36th) before Robert Skov scored twice (46th, 48th). Kazakh Yan Vorogovskiy reduced the score in the 58th minute of play.
With this victory, Denmark shares the lead of the group with Slovenia (16 points), winners at the start of the evening over Finland 3-0. Northern Ireland won against San Marino by the same score but is still in penultimate place in the group with only six points.
