Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida reached Ukraine’s capital Kiev on Tuesday on a surprise visit. Japan’s official television channel NHK gave this information. Kishida’s visit to Kiev coincided with Chinese President Xi Jinping visiting Russia and inviting Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend a summit in Beijing later this year. Xi also met with Russian officials in Moscow. Prime Minister Kishida will hold a meeting with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky.

Chinese President Chinfing’s visit to Russia and Japan’s Prime Minister Kishida’s arrival in Ukraine at the same time is considered important amid the Russia-Ukraine war that has been going on for more than a year. NHK footage showed Kishida walking on a railway station platform with some people. The people accompanying Kishida were probably Ukrainian officials.

At the same time, Japan’s Foreign Ministry said that during the visit to Ukraine, Kishida “will express his respect for the courage and fortitude of the Ukrainian people, who are always ready to defend their homeland under the leadership of President Zelensky.” The ministry said in a statement. “During talks with Zelensky, Kishida will resolutely reject Russia’s unilateral attempt to invade Ukraine and change the status quo through military means and reiterate his commitment to defending the rules-based international order,” it said.
