John Lydon, the singer of the Sex Pistols, in the running to represent Ireland at Eurovision
At 66, the musician could compete with the Public Image Ltd group formed when the punk band disbanded in 1978.
The former singer of Sex PistolsJohn Lydon, known on stage as Johnny Rotten, is in the running to represent Ireland in the contest of theEurovision in May, Irish broadcaster RTE announced on Monday. The singer’s current band, Public Image Ltd, is one of six representatives being considered to wear the colors of Ireland at this year’s extravagant singing competition in Liverpool, northern England.
The group, formed after the separation of the Sex Pistols in 1978, will know its fate at the end of a televised evening in February where it will perform against the other candidates, including the Irish group Wild Youth. John Lyndon, 66, was born in London to Irish parents. Public Image Ltd have announced that they will perform a moving tribute written by John Lyndon to his wife Nora, who has Alzheimer’s.
Eurovision takes place this year in Liverpool. Last year, Ukraine had won the contest ahead of the UK. If usually the winning country hosts the meeting the following year, the organizers felt that Ukraine would not be able to do so due to the Russian invasion and therefore decided to organize the event in the UK. The final will take place on May 13.
