La Ciotat inaugurates a lift for mega yachts unique in the world

REPORTAGE – One in seven floating palaces is getting a makeover in the shipyards near Marseille. Inaugurated on Tuesday, theAtlas is an elevator for sea giants. A revolutionary industrial tool, it should make it possible to overtake Genoa, Barcelona and Dubai.

Immobilized at the foot of the Calanques on the night of March 2 to 3 while its captain was trying to get out of French territorial waters, theLove Vero has been the star attraction for tourists for the past eight months who have come with cameras slung over their shoulders in La Ciotat, 30 kilometers west of Marseille. At night, facing the shipyards, the spectacle is magical: in the light of the spotlights, schools of barracudas and groupers come to hunt under its hull. With its swimming pool that can be transformed into a heliport, its bay windows carved into its immaculate hull and its interior designed by Alberto Pinto, this yacht of 86 meters is the property of the oligarch Igor Sechin. This close friend of Vladimir Putin has been on the list of European sanctions since the invasion of Ukraine. While waiting for the end of the war, the rental of the quay and its connection to water and electricity are financed by the maintenance company which was to renovate it.
