La Rochelle Fiction Festival: very short formats in the spotlight

No less than 43 works selected, including 24 French… More diversity in the themes covered and the formats with here the fictionalized journey of the ex-Miss France Sonia Rolland (“An Unexpected Destiny”, France Télévisions), there a biopic on Romain Gary played by Charles Berling (“The Enchanter”, France Télévisions), but also a father born mentally deficient and his daughter (“Les Enchantés”, Arte).

Without forgetting series on the hunt led by the French secret services after the attacks of November 2015 (“the Spies of Terror”, M6), the hectic daily life of a blended family (“la Tribu”, TF1) or even the action with “Drone Games” for Prime Video…

Fictions “very representative of society”

From this Tuesday and until September 17, the 25th edition of the La Rochelle Fiction Festival gives pride of place to “creative freedom”, in the words of Stéphane Strano, its president. To celebrate this quarter of a century, the jury chaired by the actress Audrey Fleurot (“HPI”) will award sixteen prizes.

“We debated at length. This year, some themes prevail over others. Fictions are very representative of society, of what it highlights and can provide solutions. We talk a lot about painful childhoods, drifting parents, violence,” underlined Marc Tessier, head of the France selection committee, during the presentation to the press.

A new prize dedicated to short films

The comedy is not left out. Particularly within the four foreign series (three from Quebec and one from Norway) competing in the new category inaugurated this year, that dedicated to short foreign formats of less than 20 minutes.

“There are more and more short series and we received more of them,” explained Carole Villevet, head of the foreign selection committee. Creating this competition is a way to “imagine the TV of tomorrow,” added Stéphane Strano. With a challenge according to him: “To design works that can be used in all broadcast media and reach all audiences. »
