Loto, EuroMillions… Where does the money not claimed by the winners go?

Jackpot is looking for a Parisian winner. The French Games (FDJ) made a call to find the winner of a EuroMillions-My Million in Paris, whose ticket was validated on June 30 and not claimed since by the lucky winner.

One million euros are at stake, if the owner of the ticket appears before Tuesday, September 12, 11:59 p.m. At the end of this period, it will be too late to receive the prize. But what will become of the money then? Two rules are provided to track these amounts.

A portion reinjected into future prize pools

When a prize is not claimed within the 60-day period provided for, la Française des jeux no longer required to pay to the victor, he is definitively lost. If it is a rank 1 win, i.e. a case where the winner had all the correct Loto, EuroMillions or My Million numbers, then the FDJ recovers the sum.

“We redistribute it to customers, in the form of special jackpots, or promotional offers, such as bets offered on our websites”, explained in September 2022 the FDJ to Parisian. Between 2020 and 2022, a total of 10 million euros was reinjected in this way into the circuits of the company for 200 million unclaimed.

The state, the biggest winner in the Loto

But if the gain concerns a person who didn’t have all the right numbers, the big winner becomes… the State. Indeed, as soon as an unclaimed gain is of rank 2 or lower, then the FDJ must pay it back to the state coffers. This represents earnings regularly exceeding several thousand euros.

This provision was put in place in 2019 with the entry into force of the Pacte law. And the loot is anything but meager for public finances: 70 million euros in 2020, then 150.2 million euros in 2021.
