With Mathieu van der Poel, Wout van Aert and Tom Pidcock at the start this Sunday in Antwerp, the 8th round of the Cyclo-Cross World Cup promised to be thrilling. However, the suspense was cut short.
Van Aert second, Pidcock sixth
Van Aert’s winter comeback was particularly scrutinized this Sunday. After a supersonic start, the Belgian champion finally marked time at the start of the second lap after a dazzling acceleration from Van der Poel. For his first cyclo-cross of the season and victim of a crash on the 6th lap, Van Aert was not able to compete over time, but should gain strength in the weeks to come.
Also cited among the main favorites and winner at Boom on Saturday, the Briton Pidcock was never able to join in the fight for victory. After a disastrous start, the cyclo-cross world champion finally settled for a modest seventh place.
Women’s cyclo-cross remains a Dutch affair. This Sunday in Antwerp, Fem van Empel logically imposed herself on the occasion of the 8th round of the World Cup, of which she had won the first four events at the start of the season.
