Maxime Huscenot eliminated in the repechage in Peniche, Tiago Carrique is doing well

After passing next to their Pro Portugal 1st round streak in Peniche on Saturday, Maxime Huscenot and Tiago Carrique had a second chance to join the round of 16, this Sunday morning on a spot of Supertubos complicated to maneuver. If Carrique managed to emerge unscathed from this morning repechage round, Huscenot had a rather cruel series.
But in the end there was not much to complain about. As he left to qualify, after seeing a nice tube on the left (7.77), he saw his position change in the home stretch. Little successful until then, Callum Robson found a mind-blowing hit five minutes from the end. Not only did he come out of this greasy bar, but the judges awarded him a “perfect 10”.
After this stunt from the Australian – the series was won by Gabriel Medina -, Huscenot then needed a 4.74 to pass this round but the Reunionese did not find any waves to try to catch up . This result – 33rd place – is a blow for the Frenchman who was hoping to sign a good performance on a tube wave connected with his surfboard, he who has also spent a lot of time in Portugal for years.
After his 17th place at Pipe and his elimination already in the repechages at Sunset, this new poor performance is a big brake in the race for the mid-season cut. He now has two events left – Bells Beach and Margaret River in Australia in April – to reverse a badly embarked situation and continue the season beyond the Australian tour.
Carrique and Slater get away with it
An hour before, the other Frenchman Tiago Carrique validated his ticket for round 3. In difficult conditions, the wildcard narrowly passed with a 3.17 and a 1.40 (total of 4.57). He narrowly edged out the experienced American Kolohe Andino (4.33). The task will be very complicated for him in 16th since the native of Costa Rica will face current world number one Jack Robinson. Joan Duruhe will be opposed to Filipe Toledo.
