Former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger is wrong when he calls for Ukraine to join NATO. This was stated by Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of Russia Dmitry Medvedev in his Telegram channel.
“Of course, in 10 days he will be 100 years old, and he also met with Brezhnev. However, here he is completely wrong. He called the conflict between the United States and China the main threat to humanity. I have always believed that for a correct essment of the situation, it is important to take into account not a hypothetical, but a direct and obvious threat, ”he wrote.
If Ukraine is accepted into NATO, Kyiv will make an attempt to return the lost territories, and Moscow will be forced to “toughly respond to this with all possible means,” he said. In this regard, Medvedev recalled Art. 5 of the Washington Treaty, which provides for the creation of a system of collective defense.
Earlier, Kissinger, in an interview with The Economist, explained that the admission of Ukraine to NATO would prevent a new round of tension between Moscow and Kiev. According to him, NATO’s decision can both secure Ukraine and contain it. Kissinger says that Russia is most likely to retain Sevastopol under any variant of the peace agreement. However, in this case, none of the parties to the conflict will be satisfied, which creates opportunities for a new confrontation.
On September 30, 2022, in response to the admission of the DPR, LPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions to Russia, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Ukraine would apply to join NATO on an accelerated basis. At the same time, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg supported Kyiv “in choosing its own path”, adding that all members of the bloc must approve this decision. On May 10, the head of the EU Foreign Service, Josep Borrell, stressed that the issue of Ukraine’s accession to NATO had not been discussed before and is not being discussed now.
