Migrants, Michel to Meloni: “Cutro is a call for real solutions, to act together”. The premier: “EU response cannot be postponed”
“The tragic shipwreck off the coast of Crotone is a strong reminder of the need to find real and workable solutions to better manage migration and combat the smuggling of migrants”. This is what the president of the European Council, Charles Michel, writes in his letter of reply to the president of the Council, Giorgia Meloni, following the shipwreck off the coast of Cutro. “At the European Council on 9 February, we affirmed our collective determination to develop an adequate European response to the complex phenomenon of migration. We agreed on a series of practical and concrete measures in the field of increased external action, enhanced cooperation on returns and readmission, control of the EU’s external borders, fight against exploitation, trafficking and smuggling of migrants. Among other things, the use of all relevant EU policies, instruments and means is envisaged, including the opportunities for legal migration”, underlines Michel in the letter which the AGI has read. “By working together and acting decisively, we must avoid the recurrence of tragedies as terrible as the one off the coast of Calabria”, writes Michel again in the letter seen by AGI.
«Palazzo Chigi expresses its heartfelt appreciation for the words addressed to Italy by the President of the European Council, Charles Michel. What President Michel said is in full harmony with the action of the Italian government in Europe aimed at better managing migration and combating the trafficking of migrants”. This can be read in the note on the letter sent to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
