Morocco, which suffered from a devastating earthquake, received help from four countries – Spain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Great Britain. The number of victims of the earthquake, according to the latest data from the authorities, reached 2122 by Sunday evening. More than 2 thousand were injured. Rescue work continues. A three-day mourning was announced in the country.
The current earthquake, which occurred late at night on Friday, became the most powerful in the country in more than half a century. According to experts, the death toll may increase, as rescuers cannot yet reach hard-to-reach areas. King Mohammed VI of Morocco mobilized army search and rescue teams to search for survivors. Helicopters and drones are involved.
Condolences and words of support for Moroccans come from all over the world. Pope Francis and President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky also made statements. Algeria, which severed diplomatic relations with Morocco in 2021, said it deeply sympathizes with the “fraternal Moroccan people” in connection with the tragedy. Russian President Vladimir Putin also sent a telegram of condolences.
