The Japanese Takaaki Nakagami has extended his contract with the Honda-LCR Idemitsu team until 2024, the satellite team of the Japanese world No. 1 manufacturer announced on Tuesday.

“I am proud to be able to count on Nakagami for another year. He is a fast rider who can achieve good results, and alongside HRC (Honda Racing Corporation) we believe this is the time to move even further forward, as he is one of the most experienced riders with this motorcycle »declared Lucio Cecchinello, the team director, quoted in a press release.

A pure product of the Red Bull young talent detection network, Nakagami, 31, joined the premier category in 2018 with a place with the private LCR team, the only team to race with Honda RCVs in addition to the official team Honda-Repsol.

He should team up with Frenchman Johann Zarco who announced several weeks ago that he was leaving Ducati-Pramac to join LCR and try to get Honda out of its current championship slump.

With eight Grands Prix remaining in the season, Nakagami occupies 17th place in the standings. He has two victories in Moto2 but none in Moto GP.

On Monday, Ducati-Pramac announced the arrival next year of Franco Morbidelli, current teammate of Fabio Quartararo at Yamaha, to replace Zarco.
