On Sunday, December 10, the 2023 Nobel Prize award ceremonies were held in Stockholm and Oslo.
The Nobel lecture of the laureate of the peace prize, the Iranian human rights activist Narges Mohammadi, was read by her children, 17-year-old Ali and Kiana Rahmani, at the ceremony in Oslo. They also received a diploma and a medal from their mother, who is in prison in Iran.
The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Mohammad for her “struggle against the oppression of women in Iran and the promotion of human rights and freedom for all.” The human rights activist wrote her Nobel lecture in Evin prison in Iran. It says that on the day of the awarding of the Nobel Prizes, Mohammadi wants to speak in defense of all Iranians who stand up against injustice and the persecuted. Mohammadi also claims that the Iranian regime has lost legitimacy and popular support.
Official Tehran has accused the Nobel Committee of interfering in internal affairs and “politicizing” the topic of human rights.
“authoritarianism is strengthening, the space for civil activity is narrowing, and the m media are under attack from all sides.” At the same time, according to the UN Secretary General, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is a “road map that helps stop wars, overcome differences and ensure a peaceful and dignified existence for all.”
Narges Mohammadi defends women’s rights in Iran. The Iranian authorities arrested her 13 times, tried her 5 times, sentenced her to a total of 154 lashes and 31 years in prison.
Directly from prison, Mohammadi supported the protests that began in the fall of 2022 after the police killed Mahsa Amina, who was detained for wearing a loose hijab. Mohammadi contributed to the fact that the protests under the slogan “Woman. Life. Freedom” did not subside, notes the Nobel Committee. The Iranian authorities brutally suppressed them.
Last year, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to human rights activists from Ukraine, Belarus and Russia. One of the two laureates of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021 was Dmitry Muratov, editor-in-chief of the Russian “Novaya Gazeta” newspaper.
Among the other Nobel laureates, who were also awarded on December 10, is the Russian citizen Alexey Ekimov. He lives and works in the USA for a long time. Ekimov became one of the three laureates of the prize in chemistry.
