Turnover money games reached the record sum of 12.9 billion euros in France in 2022, an increase of 20% over one year, driven by casinos, according to data published Thursday by the National Gaming Authority (ANJ).
If the operators holding exclusive rights (La Française des Jeux and the PMU) still represent more than half of the activity, with 64% of the gross gaming revenue (GGR) with 8.2 billion euros in 2022 (+ 8% compared to 2021), casinos experienced a 130% growth in their turnover.
Record stakes for online sports betting
This “is largely explained by the total reopening of casinos after two years of reduced activity due to the pandemic”, explains the National Gaming Authority (ANJ), while the sector has returned to its pre-crisis level, with 2.5 billion euros last year, compared to 2.4 in 2019.
On the other hand, online gambling and chance marked time with growth of 0.8%, to 2.2 billion euros, “after experiencing strong growth between 2017 and 2021 with a growth rate annual average of the PBJ of 18%”, recalls the ANJ. Online sports betting, however, recorded a level of record stakes thanks to the World Cupat 1.4 billion euros (+2.5% compared to 2021).
