A NITI Aayog committee on Friday suggested that gaushalas should be helped through marketing and financial assistance of cow dung and cow urine-based formulations for use in farming operations. In addition, a task force headed by NITI Aayog member Ramesh Chand has proposed setting up a portal for online registration of all gaushalas.
The report titled Production and promotion of organic and biofertilizers with special focus on improving the economic profitability of gaushalas said that gaushalas should be liberally financed for capital investment and operating expenses at concessional interest rates. It states that all grants should be linked to the number of cows.
According to the report, a portal like NITI Aayog’s Darpan Portal should be created for online registration of all Gaushalas, through which support from the Animal Welfare Board can be obtained. It added that specific policy measures and support are required to encourage commercial production, packaging, marketing and distribution of cow dung based organic fertilizers including brand development.
The members of the task force include Yogesh Suri, Senior Advisor, NITI Aayog, Virendra Kumar Vijay, Professor at IIT Delhi, SK Datta, Joint Commissioner, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Ganesh Sharma, Director, National Center for Organic Farming, and Ujjwal Kumar, Deputy Secretary, Department of Fertilizers.
