No podium for the French saber teams

Day without for the French saber. During the first qualifying team events for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, neither the men, fifth in Madrid (Spain), nor the women, ninth in Batumi (Georgia), managed to get on the podium on Sunday.

Yet led by Sara Balzer, winner of the individual event on Saturday, Manon Apithy-Brunet, Cécilia Berder and Margaux Rifkiss failed to clinch a third collective victory this season, beaten to the decisive touch against Ukraine in the first round (44-45). After this disappointment, the European champions and vice-world champions last season nevertheless secured precious points by winning the three clification matches against Germany (45-29), Hong Kong (45-34) and China (45-33).

Sabers still in search of a podium this season

In Madrid, Bolade Apithy, Sébastien Patrice, Maxime Pianfetti and Tom Seitz made their debut against Mexico (45-20), but fell to Italy in the quarter-finals (45-37). The Blues are still running behind a first podium this season, they who have so far done no better than a fourth place in Algiers (Algeria), in November 2022.
