Noussair Mazraoui and Achraf Hakimi doubtful with Morocco against Belgium

Injured during the match against Croatia (0-0), Mazraoui and Hakimi remain uncertain for the next match against Belgium.

Noussair Mazraoui and Achraf Hakimi, injured on Wednesday in the first match of the 2022 World Cup Morocco against Croatia (0-0)remain uncertain to face Belgium on Sunday, the Atlas Lions doctor said on Thursday.

The 24-year-old Bayern Munich defender “injured his left side,” said Abderazzak El Hifti. “We have examined him, but it is impossible to say whether he will be able to participate in the next match or not,” he added, assuring that new medical examinations are planned over the next two days.

The Paris SG international was “slightly injured” during the match against Croatia. The full-back, also 24, “felt pain in his leg at the start of the game but continued to play despite it. We will be careful and do new tests to decide if he is fit to play” on Sunday, he added.

Morocco, which plays in group F, stood up to the vice-world champion on Wednesday (0-0) and must still face Belgium on Sunday and Canada on December 1.

Noussair Mazraoui was injured in the 51st minute when he fell to the ground as he tried to regain the ball after a shot from Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic. He lay on the ground for a minute before being replaced by striker Abderrazak Hamedallah.

Achraf Hakimi was able to play until the end of the match.

The Moroccans hope to do as well in Qatar as their predecessors in 1986, when the selection became the first African team in history to reach an 8th final of the World Cup.
