CRITICISM – With this new film, the director returns to the failure of The foam of the days, released in 2013, and shows a filmmaker at work. Played by a brilliant Pierre Niney, he delivers an uncompromising self-portrait of an artist in crisis.
In 2013 released on screens The Foam of Days . A big-budget adaptation with a 4-star cast – Romain Duris, Audrey Tautou, Omar Sy, Gad Elmaleh. Fans of Michel Gondry’s films (there are many of them) and of the novel by Boris Vian (there are some left) do not rush into the rooms. Reviews are mixed. The failure is relative but Gondry’s trauma is very deep.
The director ofEternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and of Be nice, rewind attempts to exorcise this problematic film with The Book of Solutions. Ten years later, and eight years after his last fiction film, Microbe and Diesel , already very personal, Gondry rewinds the film. He returns to the editing of The Foam of Dayswhen he fled with the rushes to his aunt’s house in the Cévennes, far from Paris and the producers who were appalled by the first version he showed them.
