Barrister Gauhar Ali Khan has been elected unopposed as the new chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). Pakistan’s ARY News gave this information on Saturday. He replaced jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan. Gauhar Khan was nominated for the top post by the PTI founder a few days ago. Who else was elected in the election?

According to PTI’s election commissioner Niazullah Niazi, former federal minister Omar Ayub Khan was elected the party’s general secretary, while jailed former provincial health minister Yasmin Rashid was elected PTI Punjab president, ARY News reported. Similarly, jailed Haleem Adil Shaikh and Ali Amin Gandapur were elected unopposed as party presidents of Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) provinces. Earlier this week, Barrister Ali Zafar announced that party president Imran Khan will not contest the intra-party elections and Barrister Gohar Khan has been nominated for the post of party chief.

PTI Senator Ali Zafar made this announcement in Islamabad. Speaking to the media, Zafar said that the chairmanship of the party is temporary, as Imran Khan will return as the party president after his disqualification in the wake of the Toshakhana case. He further said that the former Prime Minister had directed the party to conduct intra-party elections. “PTI is Imran Khan and Imran Khan is PTI.” Akbar S Babar, who is a founding member of PTI, has decided to challenge the intra-party election, as per the instructions of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
