Paul Whelan, an American convicted of espionage, was beaten in a Mordovian colony



The American Paul Whelan, whom the Russian court found guilty of espionage, was beaten in the colony, the Federal Service for the Execution of Sentences reported. He already complained about the use of violence against him in 2021. Then the authorities denied it.

The 53-year-old former marine is being held in a high-security correctional colony in Mordovia. He denies guilt and asked to exchange him for someone from the Russian prisoners in the United States. The colony administration sent him to a penal institution, in 2022, as reported, he was placed in a prison hospital.

According to FSIN, this time Whelan was beaten by another prisoner “due to political differences”. It is confirmed that the colony staff immediately stopped the attacker and took him and Whelan to the medical unit.
