The Russian, 333rd player in the world, eliminated the Belgian and seeded N.28 in the round of 16 at Roland-Garros this Sunday.

A comeback. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, ex-21st player in the world who fell to 333rd place, took the best in three sets over Elise Mertens in the round of 16 of Roland-Garros this Sunday (3-6, 7-6 [7-3], 6-3). The 31-year-old Russian had to struggle in the last set where she was leading 5-1 and where she wasted four match points. She was going out of an almost white season due to a knee injury and remained on a final on Parisian clay, in 2021.

Mertens, a 27-year-old Belgian player and ranked 28th in the WTA, stops in the round of 16 like last year. In the next round, Pavlyuchenkova will find either her compatriot Elina Avanesyan or the Czech Karolina Mutchova.
