In London
Since 2001, British salaries have never increased so much in one year. The average national increase recorded this summer amounts to 7.8% compared to the same period in 2022. If we add the bonuses, from which employees of the British public health service notably benefited, the income of workers jumped by 8.5% in total. This exceptional increase, concomitant with a decline in inflation, allowed the British to get their heads a little above water: for the first time in eighteen months, in July, the increase in wages actually exceeded the increase in prices (+ 6.8%).
Across the Channel, employees do not see life rosy. Not all workers have benefited to the same extent from these increases. Employees in the private sector are better off than those in the public sector, with an 8.1% increase in wages on average, particularly those in the finance and business services sector (+9.5%).
