No one would have bet on it. The 2023 finance law complies to the letter with the military programming law (LPM) passed five years earlier! An increase of 3 billion euros compared to 2022 is proposed, bringing the military budget to a peak of 43.9 billion euros, 11.5 billion more than in 2017. Each year, an increase of 1.7 billion was adopted and this year, the government is proposing almost twice as much, according to the LPM in force which plans to go up to 50 billion euros in 2025.

The geopolitical context with the return of the war in Europe obviously does not plead to disarm, but it is clear that the French Army had never experienced such a sustained effort since almost the end of the Algerian war. After a start under Valéry Giscard d’Estaing, the Armies constantly lost money and manpower until the arrival of Emmanuel Macron as President of the Republic.
