Speaking at the meeting that brought Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu and his Syrian counterpart Faisal al-Mikdad together at the same table in Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov stated that the normalization of Ankara-Damascus relations creates a positive atmosphere in the Middle East as well.
Speaking at the meeting that brought together the Foreign Ministers of Turkey and Syria for the first time in years in Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced that they had prepared a draft roadmap for the normalization of Ankara-Damascus relations.
Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Iranian Foreign Minister Hüseyin Emir Abdullahiyan and Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal al-Mikdad attended the meeting held at the Russian Foreign Ministry building in the capital Moscow.
In his opening speech before the meeting, Lavrov stated that facilitating the safe and voluntary return of Syrian refugees and internally displaced persons to their permanent place of residence is the basic principle. Expressing that the initiation of the Turkey-Syria normalization process creates a positive atmosphere in the Middle East region as well, Lavrov said, “The best result of our meeting today may be an agreement to instruct the experts to prepare a draft roadmap for the normalization of Turkey-Syria relations for the next ministerial meeting. This will then be presented to our heads of state,” he said.
‘USA’S PURPOSE IS INSTABILITY IN SYRIA’
Emphasizing that the US supports the officials who declared the so-called administration in the east of the Euphrates and dispatches weapons to the illegal armed formations formed by them, Lavrov said, “According to the information we have received, the Americans have been deploying the so-called ‘Syria’ around Raqqa with the participation of local Arab tribes, ISIS militants and other terrorist organizations. He began to form his Free Army. “The aim is clear: to use these militants against the Syrian authorities to destabilize the situation in the country,” he said.
Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu shared on his Twitter account about the meeting of the Quadrilateral Ministers of Foreign Affairs. “We emphasized the need for cooperation in the fight against terrorism, providing the infrastructure for returns in cooperation, advancing the political process and protecting Syria’s territorial integrity,” Çavuşoğlu said.
Speaking to journalists about the meeting, Iranian Foreign Minister Abdullahiyan said that the political solution in Syria should be based on the sovereignty of Damascus over the entire territory, and that Turkey can play an important role in this regard. The Iranian minister argued that the deployment of the Syrian army in the border regions could alleviate Turkey’s concerns about terrorist organizations.
The Damascus administration stipulates the withdrawal of the Turkish soldiers in the country for reconciliation with Turkey. (AGENCIES)
