Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky last week addressed an Arab League summit in the Saudi Arabian port city of Jeddah ahead of Russian Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev’s visit to Riyadh. These visits highlight that Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries have maintained their ties with Russia during the Ukraine War.
The Arab world has traditionally been close to the US in security matters. According to the state-run Saudi Press Agency, Kolokoltsev met Saudi Arabia’s Interior Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Saud. The agency reported, without giving details, that during the meeting, apart from discussing various issues of common interest, they also discussed ways to enhance security cooperation between the Home Ministries of the two countries. The Russian media has not given any information about this visit. Kolokoltsev was sanctioned by the US in 2018 as part of sanctions over Russia’s activities in Syria and Ukraine.
