Sampdoria Genoa fans obviously have no right to happiness. Relegated since the 34th day and a new setback on the lawn of Udinese (2-0), the Ligurian club was aiming for a first victory in eight days to soften the sentence. But the teammates of Frenchman Michaël Cuisance – who did not come into play – conceded a draw in the last moments against Empoli (1-1), Monday at the Luigi-Ferraris stadium.
The first period, however, was full of hope. On his only shot on target, Samp opened the scoring through right-back Alessandro Zanoli (34th), on a p from the indestructible Fabio Quagliarella, 40. Happiness wasted by Empoli striker Roberto Piccoli (90th + 3), with a shot from the right, eight minutes after coming into play.
With 18 points in 35 days, Samp is six units behind Cremonese, penultimate in Serie A. Fourteenth, nine points ahead of the red zone, Empoli has ensured its retention in the elite.
