The Spaniards overtook Scotland this Thursday by winning in Cyprus (1-3) while the Scots conceded a draw in Georgia (2-2).
Already ured of participating in Euro 2024 in Germany, Spain easily beat Cyprus on Thursday in Limol (3-1) to consolidate its first place in Group A of the qualifiers. La Roja, now first with 18 points in seven matches, takes two points ahead of Scotland, who grabbed the point of the draw (2-2) in added time against Georgia’s Kvaratskhelia, author of a double.
Already winners in the first leg (6-0) in Granada, Luis de la Fuente’s men gave the Cypriots no chance in front of their home crowd at the Alphamega Stadium in Limol. Even with a second team, without its usual executives Alvaro Morata and Rodri, at rest, Spain immediately demonstrated its superiority, FC Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal opening the score in the 5th minute of play (1-0 ). The second goal in the selection of the 16-year-old prodigy, more than ever in the race for a place at the Euro as a starter on the right.
He was then imitated by Real Sociedad striker Mikel Oyarzabal (23rd, 2-0), well served by Alejandro Grimaldo, decisive per for his first selection after a great start to the season with Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen. Left alone at the far post, Real Madrid striker Joselu widened the gap (28th, 3-0) to sign a fifth achievement in nine selections. The only downside to a perfect first half was the injury-related exit of Oyarzabal, who had just been decisive on two occasions.
Georgia to (well) finish
With the match in hand, coach Luis de la Fuente was able to offer their first minutes with the A to Rodrigo Riquelme (Atlético Madrid) and Aleix Garcia (Girona FC). And the Cypriots ended up taking advantage of the drop in intensity of the Iberians to save the honor with Pileas (75th, 3-1). Spain now has a meeting with Georgia on Sunday (8:45 p.m.) in Valladolid to end this qualifying campaign on a good note and be among the top seeds.
