Storm Larisa: 11 departments placed on orange vigilance from tonight

Météo France calls for vigilance for this night and the day of Friday. Winds that can locally reach 140 km / h are even expected with the arrival of storm Larisa, which should also affect Spain. The organization triggered an orange alert this Thursday afternoon for 11 departments.
The Pyrénées-Orientales, Aude, Hérault, Var, Alpes-Maritimes, Haute-Corse and Corse-du-Sud are thus affected by the risk of strong winds. “On the sidelines of the Larisa depression which will circulate on the English Channel, the wind will strengthen over a large part of France this Friday, but in a very particular way in the aforementioned Mediterranean departments”, anticipates Météo France.
Apart from the storm which had caused several deaths last August on the Isle of Beauty, the public establishment specifies that a storm of such intensity “has not occurred on the continent during the last 2 years”.
At the very beginning of the morning, the Tramontane will strengthen significantly on the Plains of Aude, east of Carcassonne, the expected gusts will be around 100 to 120 km / h. On the reliefs (Capcir, Conflent, Fenouillèdes, Corbières, Montagne Noire, Espinouse and Cévennes), the gusts could even reach 130 km / h, even 140 km / h on the summits. Winds that should calm down in the afternoon.
Winds above 150 km/h in Corsica
It is at this time that the northwest wind will strengthen further east, in the Var and the Alpes-Maritimes with winds that can reach 130 km / h in the region of Fayence and hinterland of Grasse. Wind which must weaken slightly in the first part of the night.
On the other side of the Mediterranean, in Corsica, the westerly wind is expected in the morning. “The gusts are close to 120 to 140 km / h in Balagne and on the relief. On Cap Corse, they are close to 150 to 180 km/h. In the Bastia region, the gusts during the day on Friday are around 90 to 110 km / h”, anticipates weather reports. The gusts will be more violent and frequent in the afternoon, reaching 120 to 140 km / h.
Further north, the coasts of four Breton departments are also placed on orange alert due to the risk of submersion waves. These are Finistère, Côtes-d’Armor, Ille-et-Vilaine and Morbihan. “Atmospheric conditions are at the origin of a rise in sea level, which is added to high sea levels in a context of strong tidal coefficients (90 for Thursday’s high tides, 90 and 88 for those of Friday “, predicts Météo France. The combination of these two phenomena could lead to submersion of the coast, especially at the time of high tide.
