British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak expressed concern about China’s interference in the work of the British Parliament, Sky News reported.
At the G20 summit in New Delhi on the morning of September 10, Sunak met with Chinese Premier Li Qiang, at which he expressed “very strong concerns” about interference in the country’s parliamentary democracy.
Earlier, The Times newspaper, citing law enforcement agencies, reported the detention of an istant to a member of the British Parliament on suspicion of spying for China. It was clarified that the man could have been recruited while he was living in China. According to Sky News, the detainee is a 20-year-old parliamentary researcher.
In June, the Chinese Emby in London condemned a meeting between Taiwanese Digital Minister Audrey Tan and Britain’s junior security minister Tom Tugendhat. The actions were then called a violation of the “one China principle.”
In the fall of 2022, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced the end of the “golden era” of relations between London and Beijing, which was proclaimed in 2015 by then Prime Minister David Cameron. According to Sunak, the Chinese authorities have challenged British interests and values.
